Tuchel Seeks Jude Bellingham's Passion Provided The Three Lions' Star Sets Aside Egotism Outside.

One snub proved sufficient. Another and it could have seemed vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is extremely shrewd not to understand that winning the World Cup is probably going to require the involvement of the talented midfielder, even if it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to adapt to the game plans and player rankings necessary with the national team now that he is returned to Tuchel's welcoming fold.

The manager desires the player's competitive fire, his passion, but it is about channeling it constructively. Personal talent counts but England know from bitter experience that there is a price to pay when fame takes over. Still, a point has been made.

The midfielder had plenty to reflect on after his omission of the recent team selection. He observed England secure their spot at the upcoming World Cup without him. He watched the young talent excel as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He listened as the coach mention loving the group’s energy and ethics. Naturally, Bellingham has reacted in winning fashion, netting important strikes for Real Madrid versus their rivals and the Italian side. He had to be picked; another omission would have put his tournament chances precarious.

The hope is that Tuchel will have a midfielder directed towards frightening rivals rather than his own colleagues. Ultimately, in purely sporting terms, there is no advantage to picking a fight with an elite performer in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period on the sidelines has demonstrated that playing for one's country is a precious, precarious thing. The coach, on his side, can now throw a protective shield around the youngster after showing that he is not afraid to make big calls.

“There is no problem with him, and no concern about his personality,” the German commented. “Bellingham possesses that aggression. You need a certain edge to succeed at the top that he reached. Everyone must support him and create an environment which he can [have] his drive against rivals and towards the goals we are building as a team.”

The star dominated most of the attention at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming dead-rubber qualifiers versus one opponent and Albania. Who else? Well, how about Phil Foden? This is a further gifted playmaker requiring support and direction. Foden has been absent for the national team since March and has found it hard to hit the heights recently but Tuchel was impressed by the 25-year-old after how he played in his club's victory versus Borussia Dortmund recently.

The question, however, is how to use the various creators at England’s disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze have earned their places and there will be compelling reasons to select Cole Palmer once he recovers from a fitness issue. Would taking five No 10s to the World Cup be excessive? Gareth Southgate never found the right blend at Euro 2024. He made concessions by squeezing both stars into the team, restricting Harry Kane’s style in the process.

It seems unlikely Tuchel making the same mistake if it hurts the offensive structure. There is room for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the flanks. Clarity is beneficial. He is selected as a No 10. The new call-up, called up for the first time, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will compete with another player as a No 6. There will also be no position on the wing for the City star, who must play central. The coach prefers him near the striker. “It does not make sense to ask Foden: ‘We want you on the pitch but there’s no space in your preferred role, can you play the left side? Can you play other flank?’” he stated. “Phil is to feature in the No 9-10ish position, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this idea regarding him for a long time. I think it fits his style the most.”

He conceded there are occasions when Foden has not looked himself in an England shirt. “One senses as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy to play football, then obviously something is not right, be it his role, the environment, it's unclear.

“I think he is also so used to representing his club in a certain structure, to have a defined role. I think he profits a lot from clarity. What is my position? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? What are my to defensive duties?”

Tuchel mentioned one star making runs for tap-ins and Foden scoring strikes from outside the box. He added he has a longlist of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have dropped out. A new face is recognized for his good displays for City at left-back. Interest abounds.

The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in this squad. Fascinatingly, Tuchel hinted at deploying Foden as a deep-lying striker against one opponent or the other. Other options, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are other options should he be absent. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for trying new things.

Meanwhile, it is also a chance to develop the understanding with Bellingham going. It is remarkable that you have to go back to Bellingham setting up the captain to net in an international match versus the Scots in September 2023 to discover the sole instance in 35 games for England when the pair combined for a score. The coach will know that the two stars only exchanged the ball a single time during England’s draws with one opponent and Slovenia at the Euros. The connection is missing.

“At this point eventually it falls to the duty of the players,” he said. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. There is still a feeling of the player having to prove himself. He cannot even be assured to begin versus Serbia and Albania. Tuchel desires him onside but he will be watching him carefully. Set aside the ego at the door. It will make a powerful squad into an superior one.
