Miami Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Secure Initial Wins After Player Arrests
Miami recorded 86 opening half points versus the Grizzlies
The Heat secured a decisive 146 to 114 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in their first basketball match after player Rozier was detained over suspected unlawful gambling.
Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was also arrested in connection with a extensive FBI probe into illegal gambling. The two individuals contest the claims.
However, the Heat were not distracted as they scored 86 first-half scores to be ahead of the Grizzlies by thirty-nine at halftime, the biggest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37 year history.
Adebayo led the way with 24 scores and afterwards said Terry had the team's full backing.
"We support him. Full support," Adebayo stated. "You support him through and through. He's like family at the end of the day."
Miami head coach Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is a person who is important to all of us. He's had a beneficial influence on our locker room.
"We send our thoughts and support for him as he faces the situation."
Portland also secured their first game after the arrests, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' absence and guiding the team to a decisive 139 to 119 win over the Warriors.
"We all had positive times with Billups and how he coached," Tiago remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."
League Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' by Arrests
Addressing the detentions for the first time, league head Adam Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the recent days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and supporters than the integrity of the competition," he told a broadcaster. "And so I felt uneasy. It was very upsetting."
The commissioner also said an league probe into Rozier's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a game he participated for the Charlotte Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the gambling firms," he added.
"We investigated that situation and were open about it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, found no evidence.
"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the league office can't do.
"Therefore, we've been working with them from that point. Naturally, what they revealed yesterday was an charge.
"And 30 months after, he has not been found guilty of anything, in justice to Rozier.
"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise in this case between protecting people's rights and conducting an inquiry."
