Larry Summers Leaves from AI Company's Directors
Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is leaving the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a series of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became publicly available.
The economist stated in a statement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have participated, optimistic about the promise of the organization, and look forward following their development".
The former Harvard president, who once headed Harvard University, declared on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his relationship with Epstein.
Email Communications
The freshly disclosed emails revealed that Summers corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of the financier's 2019 detention for suspected sex trafficking of minors.
In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company said it understood his determination to resign.
"We value his many contributions and the insight he offered to the Board," the company remarked.
Legislative Background
This news comes after the entire Congress of the US legislature agreed on recently to pass a bill that would mandate the US justice department to release its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The bill will then proceed to the desk of the White House for approval. He has said he expects to endorse the legislation, after reversing his stance on the subject following pressure from his supporters.
Email Contents
A batch of financier-linked correspondence released by the Congressional committee recently mentioned multiple high-profile figures in the Epstein's previous network, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those people.
The emails showed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often seeking to link Summers to notable international personalities.
Personal Accountability
After the messages were released with the general audience, the former official expressed he took "complete accountability for my misguided judgment to maintain interacting with the financier".
He added that he desired "to reestablish confidence and fix relationships with the individuals closest to me".
Previous Positions
The economist occupied senior posts under party leaders; serving as economic leader under President Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.
He headed the university from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a professor there. When stating his departure from public commitments earlier on Monday, he stated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.
Additional Consequences
Following the economist's statement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a progressive think tank in DC where the professor was a senior fellow, announced that he was ceased to be affiliated with the group.
The former official became part of the directorate of OpenAI, which develops the language model, in last year - following a failed attempt to replace its chief executive OpenAI's head.
