A trio of officers perished and more than a dozen additional individuals got wounded in an apparently deliberate gas explosion at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The detonation was triggered as officers and emergency crews went into the house in the vicinity of the Verona region to carry out an eviction order for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.

The three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

Two individuals were taken into custody at the scene and one more individual who fled after the incident was located soon after. Each of them have been taken to medical facility.

The detonation could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the area displayed the structure reduced to a heap of debris.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to remove the three siblings in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The leader of the Veneto region, the regional head, stated the residence was subject to an court order due to debts accumulated by the siblings.

Mediators had been assigned to engage the family members who had secured themselves into the home. When the police reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think a family member caused the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Commander Papagno informed the media.

A propane tank had been set off, and the detonation precisely impacted our members,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also found at the property, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

The wounded by the blast consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three members of the state police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.

He thought the explosion had taken place on a level above the entrance and told journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the incident, he said officers had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas canisters being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants stated to reporters, noting that the family members had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in commemorating the three officers who had been killed in the service of their country.
