A minimum of 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio de Janeiro's Most Extensive Police Raid on Organized Crime
At least 64 people lost their lives in a police operation against the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's records.
Four security agents were included in the fatalities during the security mission in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials said. More than 80 individuals were taken into custody.
Intense confrontations commenced when around 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command countered with shooting, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, police representatives stated.
The International human rights organization said it was "shocked" by the law enforcement raid, urging "immediate and thorough inquiries".

The informal settlements adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is regarded as the main base of among the nation's strongest illegal networks.
State officials stated a minimum of 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
